I've taken a break doing Yoga here in Cebu for a few months now since some other responsibilities have taken mostly of my time. Since then, a deep urge within me is wanting to go back with the practice. I can't deny the fact that this is now part of being me, the state of self-realization, a sense of self-awareness to the core promoting a wholistic balance in and out. And that is Yoga!
My first attempt in doing a full series of Vinyasa poses was yesterday at Lahug, Cebu Yoga Nightly. My Yoga trainings before were primarily basics and a bit of intermediate poses. The Vinyasa flow I had last night was a mix of everything creating a dynamic flow from basic poses down to the most advance part which makes it a bit harder for me since there are some poses which I am unable to do.
The word Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement.” In other words, the teacher will instruct you to move from one pose to the next on an inhale or an exhale. This technique is sometimes also called Vinyasa Flow, or just Flow because of the smooth way that the poses run together and become like a dance.
What To Expect From a Vinyasa Class?
This style allows for a lot of variety, but will almost certainly include Sun Salutations. If your yoga class schedule lists a Vinyasa class, expect movement, not just stretching.
What Does “Go Through Your Vinyasa" Mean?
When the teacher says, "go through the vinyasa at your own pace," she means do Plank, Chaturanga, and Upward Facing Dog. These are series of poses comprising the Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar).
Is Vinyasa Yoga for You?
Well, in my own opinion,Yoga like any other disciplines of sports, martial arts and physical activities will rely mostly on the teacher involved. It's essential that you find a teacher you enjoy and can relate to. If your first Vinyasa class doesn’t rock your world, keep trying different teachers. If you enjoy having things a little loose and suddenly it goes unpredictable and is getting dynamic then Vinyasa is probably right for you.
Well, there are a few studios who offers Vinyasa Yoga classes here in Cebu. Among those can be found in the following locations: Cebu Holiday Gym and Spa, Citigym (basement of Waterfront hotel) and Body Mind Well-Being Inc.'s Yoga Nightly, Ananda Marga Yoga (along F. Ramos St.). Price per session varies from 100-200 per session. It is best to ask for promos or monthly packages so that you can save.
